Gone but not Forgotten...

Timothy dies protecting you from the hurricane. He sheltered your body with his own, taking on the full punishment of the storm. After he dies, your first thought is, "he should have taken me with him..." Later you cry for a long time, remembering all Timothy has done for you and that you are now alone.

After your rescue from the island, you vow someday to go back and find the cay. Imagine you are now several years older and have returned to the Devil's Mouth on a schooner. You have found Timothy's grave and have brought a new headstone to mark the spot. Write about your thoughts and feelings about this moment and what you have inscribed on his grave marker.

Storm on the Horizon

You and Timothy are hunting calico scallops when you hear the sound of a rifle shot. Timothy quickly explains that it is not really a rifle, but the sound of waves crashing against the point. He darkly explains that means a tempis' or storm is brewing, a hurricane!

You quickly start preparation for the storm. You are nervous and scared. How can two people and a cat survive the ferocity of a raging hurricane unprotected?

A Change Within

You and Timothy have been on the island for several days. Timothy has been doing all the work without complaint, but now he has asked you to weave palm fiber mats for your hut. You resent this because you are blind and how can Timothy expect you to do anything... In anger, you say words you later regret, but it is the start of something new in your relationship.

Endless Night

During your second day together, you learn more about Timothy, the man who rescued you. Your opinion of Timothy is skewed by the racial biases you have learned from your mother. You and Timothy continue to wait for rescue, but the ocean is silent. The pain from your head injury becomes unbearably worse, until at last relief finally comes, but at a cost...

Introduction-Day One

Students, imagine you are Phillip. You have just awoken on a raft that is bobbing aimlessly in the middle of the ocean. There is nothing around you but endless sky and water. You suddenly realize you are not alone on the raft... The person with you is not your mother, but a large West Indian man, a stranger.

In this journal, you will need to write from Phillip's point of view. Describe what is happening around you, as well as your thoughts and feelings. Be detailed, but do not simply retell the story. Click on "Comment" to write your post for each new entry. Be sure to only sign with your section and initials only (ex. "LA1 - SB"). DO NOT give your full name. Talk to me if you have any questions.
